Bedding Sand Layer Explained
The bedding layer sits between the compacted gravel base and the pavers. Its job is to provide a smooth, level surface that allows minor adjustments during installation. Use ASTM C-33 concrete sand, which has angular grains that lock together and resist erosion. Spread the sand over the base, then screed it to a uniform 1-inch depth using metal pipes or conduit as depth guides. Never use limestone screenings or stone dust as a bedding material, as these turn to mush when wet.
Calculating the Right Amount
For bedding sand only, multiply your patio area in square feet by 1 inch of depth. A 200 square foot patio at 1 inch deep needs about 16.7 cubic feet, or 0.62 cubic yards. At 1.35 tons per yard, that is roughly 0.84 tons or 34 fifty-pound bags. Always round up and add 10 percent for waste and low spots. If you also need sand for the gravel base sub-layer, increase the depth calculation accordingly.
