How Polymeric Sand Works
Polymeric sand contains fine sand mixed with a polymer binder, usually a modified silica compound. After sweeping it into paver joints and misting with water, the polymers activate and the sand sets into a firm yet flexible mass. This prevents weed germination, stops insect tunneling, and resists washout from rain or power washing. Application temperature matters: install when the air is above 40°F and no rain is forecast for 24 hours.
Application Tips
Sweep dry polymeric sand into joints using a push broom, working in small sections. Use a leaf blower on low to clear any sand from paver surfaces before misting, as residual sand will create a haze that is very difficult to remove once set. Mist the area lightly with a garden hose using a shower nozzle. Apply water in 30-second passes, allowing it to soak in for 5 minutes between passes. Stop when you see the water pooling instead of absorbing. Avoid heavy streams that blast sand out of joints.

A 50-pound bag covers 60 to 80 square feet with standard 1/4 inch joints and standard pavers. Wide joints cut coverage to 30 to 50 square feet per bag.
Is polymeric sand worth it?
Yes. Polymeric sand hardens when activated with water, locking pavers together and preventing weed growth and ant hills. It lasts 8 to 10 years compared to 1 to 2 years for regular sand.
Can I apply polymeric sand over old sand?
No. Remove all existing joint sand first using a pressure washer or stiff broom. Polymeric sand needs to fill the full joint depth to bond properly.
