Roof Area Calculator
Find the actual surface area of your roof by entering the length, width, and pitch. This tool accounts for slope to give you the true area in square feet and roofing squares.
Why Roof Area Is Larger Than Footprint
A roof covers more area than the building's footprint because it slopes. Imagine unfolding a roof and laying it flat: it would be larger than the floor plan. The steeper the pitch, the bigger the difference.
For a flat roof, area equals length times width. For a sloped roof, multiply that footprint area by a pitch multiplier. The multiplier depends on the slope. A gentle 3/12 pitch increases area by about 6%. A steep 12/12 pitch increases it by over 40%.
This calculator uses the Pythagorean theorem to derive the multiplier. The formula is β(1 + (pitch/12)Β²). Plug in your pitch, calculate the multiplier, and multiply by the footprint area to get the true roof surface.
Measuring Different Roof Types
Simple gable roofs have two identical planes. Measure one side and double it. Hip roofs have four planes, each potentially a different size. Measure each plane's length and width, calculate the area, and add them together.
Complex roofs with dormers, valleys, and multiple levels require breaking the roof into sections. Treat each section as a separate rectangle or triangle, calculate its area, and sum everything. This takes more time but ensures accuracy.
For irregular shapes like rounded or mansard roofs, approximation becomes necessary. Divide the roof into smaller, manageable shapes that you can measure. Over-estimate slightly to ensure you have enough materials. It is better to have extra than to run short mid-project.
From Roof Area to Material Estimates
Once you know the total roof area in square feet, convert to roofing squares by dividing by 100. Shingles, underlayment, and other roofing materials are priced per square. Knowing the square footage lets you estimate costs quickly.
For shingles, multiply the number of squares by the cost per square. Add 10-15% for waste, especially on complex roofs. Underlayment and ice-and-water shield follow the same calculation but have different coverage rates per roll. Check the product specs to see how many square feet each roll covers.
Do not forget accessories: ridge caps, starter strips, flashing, and nails. These add to the total cost but are easy to overlook when you focus only on shingles. A complete estimate includes every component, not just the primary roofing material.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure roof area from the ground?
Measure the building's footprint (length Γ width). Then multiply by a pitch multiplier to account for slope. This calculator applies that multiplier automatically.
What is the pitch multiplier?
The pitch multiplier converts flat area to sloped area. It comes from the Pythagorean theorem: multiplier = β(1 + (pitch/12)Β²). A 6/12 pitch has a multiplier of about 1.118.
Should I measure each roof plane separately?
Yes. For gable roofs, calculate one plane and double it. For hip roofs or complex designs, measure each section separately and add the results.
Does this include overhangs?
No. Measure the actual roof surface, including overhangs, for an accurate estimate. Add the overhang distance to both length and width before calculating.
How many square feet are in a roofing square?
One roofing square equals 100 square feet. Divide your total area by 100 to convert square feet to squares.
