Types of Vinyl Plank Flooring

Flexible LVP is the original luxury vinyl plank. It's thin and pliable, typically glued down over smooth subfloors. Flexible planks conform to minor imperfections but telegraph dips and bumps. They're quiet underfoot and warmer than rigid products, but require perfect subfloor prep.

Rigid core LVP uses a composite core made from stone plastic composite (SPC) or wood plastic composite (WPC). SPC is denser and more durable; WPC is slightly softer and quieter. Both install as floating floors with click-lock edges, making them DIY-friendly. Rigid core resists dents and temperature changes better than flexible LVP.

Glue-down vinyl planks create the most permanent installation. They're ideal for commercial spaces and high-traffic areas because they don't shift or gap. Glue-down requires a pristine subfloor and skilled installation but delivers a solid, quiet floor. Use pressure-sensitive adhesive for easier future removal.

Subfloor Preparation for Vinyl Plank

Vinyl shows every imperfection in the subfloor. High spots and low spots telegraph through, creating visible ripples. Use a long straightedge to check for flatness. The subfloor must be level within 3/16 inch over 10 feet for rigid LVP, or 1/8 inch for flexible glue-down.

Fill low spots with self-leveling compound. Grind or sand high spots until they're flush. Remove old adhesive, paint, and wax completely; these prevent new adhesive from bonding. Vacuum thoroughly, then wipe with a damp cloth to remove fine dust.

Concrete subfloors need a moisture test before vinyl installation. Tape a 2Γ—2 foot plastic sheet to the floor and wait 72 hours. If condensation forms underneath, the slab is releasing too much moisture. Apply a vapor barrier primer or use a vinyl product rated for high-moisture environments. Skipping this step leads to adhesive failure and mold growth.

Installation Methods and Best Practices

Click-lock floating floors are the fastest to install. No adhesive neededβ€”planks snap together and rest on underlayment. Start in a corner, leave a 1/4-inch expansion gap at walls, and stagger end joints by at least 8 inches. The entire floor floats, expanding and contracting as one unit.

Glue-down installation creates a permanent bond. Spread adhesive with a 1/16-inch notched trowel, following manufacturer's open time. Press planks into wet adhesive and roll the floor with a 100-pound roller within 2-3 hours. Glue-down works over plywood, concrete, and existing vinyl if properly prepped.

For both methods, acclimate the vinyl in the installation room for 24-48 hours. Vinyl is less sensitive to temperature and humidity than wood, but acclimation prevents short-term expansion. Cut planks face-up with a utility knife, scoring several times until it snaps cleanly. A vinyl cutter or circular saw works for complex cuts, but sharp utility knives handle most jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is LVP flooring?

LVP stands for Luxury Vinyl Plank. It mimics hardwood with realistic textures and colors but is 100% waterproof. LVP is durable, affordable, and easier to install than real wood.

Do I need underlayment for vinyl plank?

Depends on the product. Rigid core LVP often has attached underlayment. Flexible vinyl planks may need a separate foam underlayment for cushioning and sound dampening.

Can vinyl plank be installed in bathrooms?

Yes. Vinyl is waterproof, making it ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and basements. Ensure proper subfloor prep to prevent telegraphing imperfections.

How much does vinyl plank flooring cost?

Budget LVP starts around $1-2 per square foot. Mid-range options run $3-5, and premium rigid core or stone-look LVP can reach $6-8 per square foot.

How long does vinyl plank last?

Quality LVP lasts 15-20 years or more. The wear layer thickness determines longevity; 12-mil or thicker wear layers handle heavy traffic and pets well.
